Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) January 19, 2011

Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, S.C., is celebrating its 40th birthday during 2011. The oceanfront campground is planning great events, contests, prizes and activities to commemorate its history, relationships and triumphs.

The yearlong celebration will center around Ocean Lakes’ loyal guests and teammates. Highlights include a cake gala and contest featuring $ 3,000 in grand prizes; random prize giveaways; a “Picture This! Calendar Photo Contest”; the unveiling of a new mascot costume to attend events; and the dedication of a town clock. In addition, Ocean Lakes’ goal is to reach 40,000 fans on Facebook by its birthday on July 2, 2011; there are now more than 22,000 fans.

“Our founders have always said that we are in the ‘family business,’” said Barb Krumm, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Ocean Lakes Family Campground. “Our goal has always been customer service and to create a place for family fun. In 2011, we are celebrating 40 years of creating family memories that last a lifetime.”

The East Coast’s largest campground will kick off its birthday celebration by hosting its 11th Annual Beach n’ Boogie Weekend Feb. 18 through Feb. 19. It will feature great beach music by The Fantastic Shakers and The Embers, shag lessons, prizes, food and fun for all ages.

Facebook fans from all over the country will gather at Ocean Lakes for its 2nd Annual Facebook Fan Appreciation Weekend April 1 through April 2. Last year, more than 100 fans participated in the fun-filled weekend. This event is fun for those who attend in person as well as those tuning in remotely on Facebook for photos, prizes, video and games.

On April 15, the campground will host its premier event of the season, the exclusive Cake Gala. To attend the gala, guests must win one of 400 elusive “Golden Tickets” online or in park. At the gala, Ocean Lakes’ guests and teammates will create cake masterpieces that embody the 40 years of great memories and fun at Ocean Lakes Family Campground. There are three categories in this contest and each grand prize winner will receive $ 1,000.

More than 30,000 guests will be in the park for Ocean Lakes’ official birthday on July 2. Plans include many prizes and birthday activities. The campground wants to recognize guests with the same birth date, and especially those who turn 40 on that day.

Other highlights throughout the year include the 2nd Annual Salute to the Troops on Independence Day, the 13th Annual Premier Bluegrass Weekend, Gospel Weekend, 7th Annual All Star Golf Car Show, Halloween Weekend and the South Carolina Fossil Fair.

“Our campground has a rich history of drawing families from all over the United States for a premier camping experience,” Krumm said. “Millions have vacationed at Ocean Lakes – many families for three and four generations. It’s an honor to be part of their families’ traditions. Plus, we have several teammates who have worked here for 20 to 30 years. Many of our guests and teammates know each other by name.”

An Amazing Family History

Ocean Lakes Family Campground was built by Mary Emily and Nelson Jackson, along with their five daughters, in 1970. Although it is considered a “mega park” in the camping industry, it had humble beginnings; it opened on July 2, 1971, with 30 campsites and one

bathhouse. It now features 893 campsites and more than 2,500 annual lease sites on 310 oceanfront acres with nearly one mile of beachfront, four bathhouses, and more than 400 teammates in the height of the camping season.

In 2006, Ocean Lakes received the prestigious South Carolina Governor’s Cup for making a significant economic impact on South Carolina. It has been named the National “RV Park of the Year” four times by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC).

Spyros Capralos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, said: ‘The Handover of the Olympic Flame is a key milestone for each Olympic Games as the Torch Relay rallies the world’s athletes to make their final preparations. After a fantastic eight day Torch Relay around Greece we wish London and the whole of the UK well for a successful 70 day Torch Relay and Olympic Games.’

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: ‘Like the Olympic Games, the Flame belongs to the world, and the arrival of the Flame in the host nation is a clarion call to the athletes and young people in more than 200 nations and territories preparing to gather for the London 2012 Games.

‘The Olympic Flame will visit every nation and region, shining a light on the people, places, communities and cultures of the United Kingdom. We have found the very best in our Torchbearers, who like Olympic athletes, will inspire a generation.’

Led by HRH the Princess Royal carrying the Olympic Flame in a lantern, Chair of LOCOG Sebastian Coe, Minister for Sport and the Olympics Hugh Robertson, Mayor Boris Johnson, London 2012 ambassador David Beckham and the five UK youth representatives then departed the stadium for a reception at the British Ambassador’s residence, where the Olympic Flame will remain overnight, before the flight to the UK.

Dr David Landsman OBE, HM Ambassador, Athens said: ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, the Olympic Flame passes through Athens on its way to London. The handover to HRH the Princess Royal epitomises the link in both sport and values between the ancient Greek Olympic tradition and the modern Olympic Games we are excitedly looking forward to hosting.’

The Olympic Flame will be leaving Athens on Friday 18 May to arrive into the UK at RNAS Culdrose, near Helston, Cornwall at approximately 7.30pm BST.

Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson, said: ‘The Olympic Flame will travel far and wide across the country and celebrate many local heroes, picked to be Torchbearers, who make such a positive contribution in their communities. We stand ready to welcome the world this summer and showcase the very best of Britain.’

On the morning of 19 May the Olympic Flame will then travel from RNAS Culdrose to Land’s End ready for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. The Olympic Flame will travel 8,000 miles across the UK to within 10 miles of 95% of the population. 8,000 Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame for approximately 300 metres each, passing the Olympic Flame from torch to torch until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on the eve of 27 July.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, said: ‘Receiving the Olympic Flame is a great honour. Its arrival signals the beginning of a fantastic summer for London when the world will focus on this great city to celebrate the greatest sporting extravaganza on the planet.

‘It is also the starting gun for London to harness the extraordinary opportunity the Games offer to build on the impressive legacy of new jobs and economic growth we are already delivering across the capital.’

About the Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium is located on the site of an ancient stadium and for many centuries hosted games in which athletes competed in track events and athletics championships. A creation of the Athenians, as its name proudly proclaims, the Panathenaic Stadium has been the venue for noble competition and fair play, of mind and of body, since Antiquity. The stadium was rebuilt in its present glory in preparation for the first modern Olympic Games, held in 1896. Throughout the twentieth century the Panathenaic Stadium hosted diverse events, among them pan-Hellenic and international games. In the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the stadium was the venue for the archery events and acted as the finishing line of the Marathon race.

Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

For Duane Seaman, landing men on the moon was in the job description.

In his new book, “Essays in Idleness” (published by AuthorHouse), Seaman reflects on his time with NASA as project supervisor for the Apollo “Moonshot” Program. He also recounts his adolescence during the Great Depression and enduring the post-World War II era.

According to Seaman, the book was not only a release for him but also a way to get readers reflecting on a particularly hard time in American history.

“While reading this book, older generations will have a chance to reflect on their childhoods and adolescences,” says Seaman. “Younger readers can finally understand their parents’ and grandparents’ points of view.”

In addition to his memories, Seaman also devotes sections to his observations, original poetry and works of fiction. The observations section features a compilation of unusual idioms and songs, including a “Gee Whiz” section and original name game.

“All of these memories, reflections and observations have been gathered over 60 years of my life,” says Seaman, who is 82. “There’s something here for everyone. I include the bizarre, the crazy, the extraordinary, the seemingly impossible and even the outrageous.”

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) September 02, 2011

Many parents have struggled with these and other questions for decades. Now, Dr. Lawrence Richards provides Moms, Dads and kids with the answers in

It Couldn’t Just Happen: Knowing The Truth About God’s Awesome Creation (Thomas Nelson, ISBN-13/EAN: 978-1-4003-1714-1, ISBN-10: 1-40003-1714-2, Publication Date: August 2nd, 2011, Price: $ 14.99) offering solid, Biblical explanations for the tough questions kids ask.

Dr. Richards says, “Young people are especially vulnerable to the claim that ‘science’ proves evolution. It Couldn’t Just Happen reassures kids that despite what they may hear in their classrooms, it’s far more reasonable to look to Creation for an explanation of origins that to look to the theory of evolution.”

Containing solid, compelling evidence of God’s creation of the universe and all living creatures, It Couldn’t Just Happen will fascinate kids and parents alike with fun activities at the conclusion of each chapter examining earth in our universe, how life began, humanity, nature, and the Bible itself. It Couldn’t Just Happen also includes terrific photographic, illustrated, and written examples of God’s marvelous works like the human body and the wonders of nature.

This four-color book helps explain the beliefs of those who think that life came into existence without God, and helps kids and parents develop confidence in their faith.

Phoenix (PRWEB) October 18, 2011

As another year comes to a close, families are making New Year’s resolutions to stay on a budget – but not at the expense of losing fun-filled family vacations, according to Amy Graff, independent family travel expert for Best Western International and senior editor for the award-winning blog, On the Go with Amy.

In 2012, families will be looking for budget-friendly travel spots with local attractions like national parks, museums with free or discounted days and hotels with kid-friendly amenities, such as pools and playgrounds. To help families plan memorable and budget-conscious vacations, Graff released today her Top 12 Destinations for Family Travel for 2012 list with tips for how to enjoy an affordable getaway.

“Families are eager to trade in the interstate for one of North America’s iconic routes to create lasting family travel memories starting next year,” Graff said. “Whether traveling along Route 66 or across the Trans-Canada Highway, expect families to become creative in the way they approach travel and visit cities and attractions that entice a sense of nostalgia for grownups and deliver new adventures for kids.”

Graff’s Top 12 Destinations for Family Travel list includes the following cities (listed in alphabetical order):

Spokane, Washington (PRWEB) January 19, 2012

Former high school teacher Lane Weinberg still has a few lessons to teach – and at least one more award to collect.

Weinberg, 72, retired in 2006 after teaching for 49 years, including 44 in the Mead School District, located just north of his hometown of Spokane. During a teaching career that stretched from the St. Louis Public Schools (where he worked for four years after earning a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis) to Mount Spokane High School, Weinberg – who taught mostly environmental science classes – carved a niche as an ecological champion, spearheading several local initiatives designed to teach his students the importance of environmental stewardship.

Among other programs, Weinberg – always with an army of students in tow – led cleanups of city parks, protested against numerous environmentally unsound residential and commercial developments and initiated a 1964 petition drive that resulted in the Spokane City Council’s Riverfront and Great Gorge Park Development Statement, which directed new urban projects to clean up and improve the city’s riverfront area.

Over the years, those efforts earned the teacher nearly two dozen awards from local governments, groups and associations, including the City Council – which honored Weinberg four times as its Citizen of the Year – and regional chapters of the National Audubon Society, the Boy Scouts of America and the Nature Conservancy, to name a few.

On Jan. 23, Weinberg will be honored again, this time for his work behind the scenes of Sustainable September, Spokane’s annual, month-long promotion of “green living.” Weinberg worked closely in 2011 with Community-Minded Enterprises, the nonprofit organization behind the annual event, and rallied several students from the Mead School District to the cause. Students created signs promoting the event, wrote reports on the importance of environmental sustainability and even signed pledges to take certain conservative measures during September, such as limiting their daily electricity usage and either walking or biking to school one day per week, in lieu of taking a car or bus.

Because of those efforts, the Spokane Community College Natural Resources Association is honoring Weinberg as its 2012 Person of the Year.

“Anybody who knows me knows I’m a firm believer in sustainability and reducing our so-called ‘carbon footprint,’” Lane Weinberg said. “I think Sustainable September and all of the work done by groups like Community-Minded Enterprises and Down to Earth Northwest is terrific, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

The SCC Natural Resources Association is open to all individuals interested in natural resources and forest management. The club invites guest speakers from private, state and federal agencies to its weekly informational meetings – Weinberg has lectured there several times – and encourages participation in professional organizations such as the Society of American Foresters.

“We’ve known Lane Weinberg for a long time,” said Natural Resources Association member Gary Brown. “He’s a true gentleman and one of Spokane’s all-time great environmental leaders. He’s done more for environmental causes than just about anyone, ever, in all of the Inland Northwest, and the only surprise here is that it took us this long to honor him for his tremendous efforts.”

The association plans to salute Weinberg during its regular weekly meeting, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Jan. 23 in Building 8, Room 103, on the Spokane Community College campus.

“I am deeply honored that the Natural Resources Association would choose to honor me,” Lane Weinberg said. “But the real honor is doing something that helps the environment, and of course emphasizing the importance of environmentalism and conservatism with younger generations. These kids are the ones who will be called on to make a difference in the future, and if I can do something that teaches them now how important it is to take care of the world around us, then that’s the real reward.”

About Lane Weinberg

Lane Weinberg, 72, is a retired schoolteacher and environmentalist in Spokane, Washington. Except for the six years he studied at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the four years he lived and worked in the City of St. Louis, he’s a lifelong Spokane resident. Recognized four times as the Spokane City Council’s Citizen of the Year, Weinberg enjoys hiking and kayaking. He lives with his wife of 50 years, Mary, and visits his four children and 12 grandchildren often.
